Volunteers at Surplus informal care sometimes have contact with people with a form of dementia. To learn more about dementia, Surplus regularly organises courses for existing and new volunteers.
Petra van Aert: “People who, like us, need contact and want to contribute to society. We often have the idea that someone with dementia is just passive or aggressive. That image is not correct. We often get to hear the extremes, but there are other stories too. Having dementia is not pretty or fun of course. But there are many people who, with some support, are still able and willing to participate in society. These people mainly need help to get an overview. Often, someone still wants to and can continue to work or pursue hobbies. If necessary, in a slightly different form, but it is still possible. In addition, general awareness-raising can be good. If we are more aware of each other's needs, and possibly find out that they are the same, contacts between people will improve and someone with a form of dementia will decline less quickly.”
Also join this course?
This course is intended for existing volunteers. But certainly also for new volunteers who want to get involved in supporting informal carers and their loved ones in Zundert. This can be done in various ways. By going for a walk together or offering a listening ear over a cup of coffee. Interested in joining the next training course?
