Good news: installing a home for informal care becomes easier

Would you like to care for a loved one and are considering an assisted living facility? That will soon become easier. The government is working on a new law. This law will ensure that you can build an informal care home under the same rules throughout the Netherlands. Municipalities will no longer be allowed to make extra rules.

What will change?

The new law is called: Strengthening Public Housing Control. That law states that placing a sheltered accommodation should be possible in the same way in all municipalities. Now the rules are still different in each municipality. This sometimes causes confusion or delays.

With this new law, there will be more clarity and less hassle.

Why is this important for informal carers?

An informal care home is a good solution if you care for your father, mother, partner or another family member, for example. You then live close to each other, but separately. This makes caring easier. And it helps to maintain independence.

Currently, there are still municipalities where it is difficult to build a home for informal care. The new law changes this. Municipalities will soon no longer be allowed to impose additional requirements.

The family home

The new law also contains something else new: the family home. This is a home in the yard, for family members who want to live close together. For example, parents, children or a partner. There is no need for care yet. This means you can also start living together in the meantime, without the need for informal care right now.

A family home may be built permit-free. This not only helps with the housing shortage, but also makes it easier to take care of each other later. So it is a good way to help each other now and in the future.

What can you do now?

The law is not yet final. The Lower House has already agreed to the new law, it still has to pass through the Senate. But you can already see what is possible in your municipality. We will be happy to help you with that.
